Dr. Susan Kleiner

Author and nutritional consultant
Dr. Kleiner is the author of The POWERFOOD Nutrition Plan (Rodale Press, 2005) and the acclaimed POWER EATING® (Human Kinetics, third edition, 2007). She has also authored High-Performance Nutrition: The Total Eating Plan to Maximize Your Workout (Wiley, 1996), The POWER EATING® AND FITNESS LOG (Get Pumped, 1999), The Be Healthier Feel Stronger Vegetarian Cookbook (Macmillan, 1997), and The High Performance Cookbook (Macmillan, 1995). Nutrition consultant to The Seattle Sonics and the Seattle Seahawks, she was also lead nutritionist in developing the GymAmerica.com site. National columnist and speaker
Dr. Kleiner is a national columnist and speaker on the subject of nutrition, sports, and fitness. She is an advisory board member for Shape, Let's Live, and Physical magazines. She was the sports nutrition editor for the SCAN website, the professional online resource for sports nutritionists and for the professional periodical Athletic Therapy Today. Other publications include The Physician & Sportsmedicine, Training & Conditioning, Men's Health, Men's Fitness, Muscle & Fitness, Muscle & Fitness Hers, Shape, Shape Cooks, Fitness Rx for Women, Fitness Rx for Men, Healthline, Consumer Reports On Health, IDEA Today, Female Bodybuilding, Bodybuilding Lifestyles, Swimming Technique, Executive Health's Good Health Report, chapters in medical textbooks, and professional research articles. Dr. Kleiner has twice contributed to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Education and awards
Dr. Kleiner earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Hiram College (1979), a Master of Science in Nutrition (1982) and Doctor of Philosophy in Nutrition (1987) from the Department of Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In 1982 she became a Registered Dietitian (RD) of the Commission on Dietetic Registration, and in 1992 she was one of the first Certified Nutrition Specialists (CNS) recognized by the Certification Board for Nutrition Specialists.

Her research has focused on sports and cardiovascular nutrition, with a special concentration on the nutritional requirements of strength training and muscle building. She received a Young Investigator Award from the American College of Nutrition for her doctoral research on the cardiovascular disease risks of diet and anabolic steroid use in competitive male bodybuilders.

After completing her doctorate, Dr. Kleiner was appointed to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1988, she became the first faculty member appointed by Duke University Medical Center to the newly endowed Sarah W. Stedman Center for Nutritional Studies. As an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Medicine, she served as Administrative Director for the Stedman Nutrition Center from August, 1988 to August, 1990. During that time, Dr. Kleiner also became the first Director of Nutrition for Duke University's Preventive Approach to Cardiology and the Center for Living lifestyle modification program.

Dr. Kleiner was North Carolina Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year and also received the American Dietetic Association Outstanding Service Award in 1990. She is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition (FACN) and The International Society for Sports Nutrition (FISSN), and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Dietetic Association and its Sports, Cardiovascular and Wellness Nutritionists (SCAN) Practice Group, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Dr. Kleiner enjoys the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest where she lives with her husband and two daughters on Mercer Island, Washington.

Dr. Kleiner is available as a consultant to sports teams, and start-up and established businesses in the food, beverage, and nutritional supplement industry.

Industry Consulting
Dr Kleiner is expert in the areas of nutrition consulting and communication. She is a consultant to business and industry as a future strategist, market analyst, researcher and product developer. Dr. Kleiner frequently helps build relationships and partnerships between businesses, as well as creating research opportunities between industry and academic institutions.

Public Relations and Communications Dr. Kleiner is well known internationally by journalists and the public as a highly respected nutrition expert. During any month she can be found quoted in many popular magazines, both in print and electronically. Dr. Kleiner is an advisory board member, editor and frequent contributing author to some of the most successful health and fitness magazines. As a public relations and media consultant, Dr. Kleiner is a national product spokesperson with extensive experience in print, broadcast, and electronic media. She has done national satellite and live media tours, and she is a dynamic and motivating public speaker.

In addition to counseling athletes, Dr. Kleiner consults with sports teams to create a comprehensive nutrition program that meets the needs of the team and its sport. Individual counseling sessions, team classes, training camp menus and recipes, in-flight menus, pre-game meals, and further educational materials and experiences can be developed to create a comprehensive and branded team nutrition program.
